How to Measure Your Windows
Accurate measurements are the foundation of well-fitting curtains. Follow these steps in order, and double-check each measurement before proceeding.

Measure the window width
Measure the full width of the window recess from left to right. If your curtain rail extends beyond the window, measure the full rail width instead. Record this measurement in centimetres.
Pro tip: Always use a metal tape measure; fabric tapes can stretch and give inaccurate readings.
Measure the curtain height
Measure from the top of where the curtain rail will be mounted down to the desired bottom edge. For floor-length curtains, measure to approximately 1 cm above the floor. For sill-length curtains, measure to the windowsill.
Pro tip: Measure the height at three points (left, centre, right) and use the smallest measurement to ensure the curtain does not catch on the floor.
Account for rail overhang
Add 15 to 20 cm on each side of the window for the curtain rail overhang. This allows the curtains to stack back fully without blocking the window when open.
Pro tip: The total rail width = window width + 30 to 40 cm (15 to 20 cm per side).
Note the ceiling height
If mounting the rail to the ceiling, measure from the ceiling to the desired curtain bottom. Ensure there is enough clearance for the rail and curtain heading.
Pro tip: Leave at least 5 cm between the ceiling and the top of the curtain rail for mounting brackets.
Record all measurements
Write down all measurements clearly, noting which dimension is which. Include the window width, total rail width, curtain height, and any other relevant dimensions.
Pro tip: Take a photo of the window with your tape measure in place. This helps your curtain specialist verify the measurements.
